我們常聽說“救人一命，勝造七級浮屠”。浮屠是指佛塔，供奉舍利。佛塔是源自印度，印度語的梵文叫Stupa, 巴厘文叫Thupo, 傳入中國時被翻譯為“塔婆”、“佛圖”、“浮圖”、“浮屠”等。在西元一世紀佛教傳入我國，隋唐時翻譯家創造“塔”字，作為統一Stupa或Thupo的譯名。 塔的層數一般為單數，七級浮屠就是七層塔，是佛教的最高級別佛塔，作為來供養佛陀及弘揚佛法，是很大的功德。因此，後人把救一個人的性命視作比建寶塔禮佛還要深重的功德，因此有救人一命勝造七級浮屠這個說法。 早前湖南長沙有不善水性的父女不幸落入海中載浮載沈，岸上的壯士沒有坐視不理見死不救，在千鈞一髮中，他們脫下自己的衣服捆綁成一條救命索拋入海中施救，刻不容緩之際，大家把握時間找到專業的救援繩把父女救上岸。 當天協助救人的善菩薩都造了七級浮屠的功德，功德無量。
